Bar: Humboldt State University Special Edition (72%)
Maker: Dick Taylor (California, USA)
Price: $9/57g (French Broad Chocolate Lounge)
Overall Rating: 7/10
Munch Factor: 7/10
Ingredients: Organic Cacao, Organic Cane Sugar, Onion, Sesame Seed, Poppy Seed, Garlic & Sea Salt.
Appearance: Dark color in the signature Dick Taylor mold emblazoned with their name, but when one flips to the other side there is a veritable mosaic of bird seed.
Smell: Decided cocoa, and some crumby nuttiness with definite black pepper. More savoury than sweet.
The Melt & Snap: nice melt & good snap.
Taste: With a small munch to blend the ingredients, one gets a surprisingly (to me) good chocolate experience, albeit decidedly savoury with a not-unpleasant garlic salt finishing crunch. The chocolate fades fast.
Complaints & Complements: I bought this bar because I think it is important to always expand your horizons. That said, it is bold to pair chocolate and garlic; it is a well-made bar, but what really sticks with you are the inclusions, and considering that it is primarily a chocolate bar, that is not a good thing. I believe it would make in interesting gift for many, however.
Context: outside in warm spring weather, under the shade of an oak.
