Bar: Moonwalk 70%
Maker: Cloudforest Chocolate (Portland, OR, USA)
Price: $6.75/35g (Sugar Pill in Seattle, USA)
Munch Factor: 5/10
Ingredients: organic cacao beans, organic cacao butter, organic cane sugar, Pop Rocks (lactose, corn syrup, flavoring).
Appearance: this is a stunning little package, a dull silver square with a grey blob of wax holding its four petals together, and a very striking blue print. The bar itself is a medium brown with large nibs adorning the back, and some very hard-to-see pop rocks. Plain mold; plastic inner packaging.
Aroma: dried red fruits & dusty cocoa.
Melt & Snap: okay melt & very strong snap.
Flavor: fruitiness awakens the mouth first, dull rather than sharp, and a bold underlying cocoa flavor spreads throughout the mouth. Finish is short and chocolatey, much more mild than I’d expect from a Malagasy cacao. No pop rocks flavor or sensation is ever felt, at least as long as I chew the bar.
Complaints & Complements: this is a perfectly nice bar. I’ll happily & quickly eat away at it, but it doesn’t offer me anything particularly unique in terms of flavor notes or origin, though I’m quite enamored of the maker’s packaging. The chocolate itself is also well-made.
Context: in my cool office with the heater on, before lunch.
